Interesting, apparently, they planned to have the game less insanely hard at first.
And Link is... blue ??

Seems like it's fake, to me.

It breaks my heart that a lot of people can't be convinced that this is real.

Also, getting the blue ring changes Link's tunic color.

If people are doubting the validity of Chris Covell's statements, then in that case, this entire forum is fake, as is our entire existence.

It's pretty damn likely that the disk found is 100% legitimate. Not only because of the colour of the disk, the print, and the in-game changes themselves, but also because we're talking about Chris Covell who lives in Japan and has a well-established history of being reliable/honest.

Furthermore, if the concerns are that this could be "a simple romhack that someone put on the disk" -- no romhacker in existence would go to the extreme of trying to write their hacked ROM back to a Famicom disk.

You're just going to have to trust people, peppers. :-)

So, chris, it's you who found the prototype ?
Congratulations for that !

Personally I wouldn't doubt dumped prototypes, but I'd doubt people who SELL prototypes.

I don't know what a Romhacker would have to gain to pass his hack as a prototype (except maybe amazement of many peoeple on the net haha and the "joy" to have fooled all of them).
But if there is a dump you could easily tell the difference : If you modify a bunch of code then re-compile it changes are that all labels are moved somewhere else in ROM memory... which is never the case in ROM hacks. (unless you rewrite the whole game which is a huge waste of time).
So by comparing the binaries you could immediately tell the prototype and the rom hack apart.

True.

I resent the implication that Doppelganger's disassembly of Super Mario Bros. was a waste of time. I helped :P

But can one easily tell the prototype from an infamous ROM hack?
