I'm strongly against 7zip since it's so much damn source code for the package that it's a barrier to even compiling it on one's machine if an executable isn't available. ZIP is well-documented, has virtually universal support, and very simple to implement compactly.

Regarding archive size, I recently compressed my copy of Kevin Horton's NSF collection and the ZIP was 4.5MB. The RAR was only a hundred or so K smaller; RAR works best when there is lots of inter-file redundancy (I would have expected some for NSF files since there are probably several common player engines).

Several NSFs on Zophar have incorrect header bits set, and some don't properly set the $4017 mode. The NSFE format is nice, and if everyone tagged and timed a few of their favorite NSF soundtracks into NSFE format, Disch's NSFE collection could be made more complete. But I'm just rambling now.

EDIT: 8.6MB Thought I'd let my fellow dial-uppers know.

Does anyone have that Zip of Kevin Hortons NSF collection? The one that was split up into company name folders?

I can't seem to find it online at all anymore. :(

I've put up a copy of Kevin's original nsfcoll archive below -- this is also on nesdev, but PLEASE do not download it (it's not linked anywhere, and it'd chew up bandwidth). Instead, please download it at the following link, since the shell I've put it on has essentially free 100mbit bandwidth.

Enjoy -- and be sure to thank Kevin for all the work he put into this.
