I think there are tools to encode and decode samples, aren't there?

UncleSporky, you forgot this one:

It's an OK forest in my opinion. Better than the DuckTales one at least.

What's so wrong with having the return from the NMI go to JMP $current_pc if you don't need a frame counter?

New version released (v1.5)! New features: -The minimum and maximum dictionary bytes can be set by the user instead of being fixed at $80-$FF -The compressor can skip compressing certain bytes that you want to omit -You can set the maximum recursive depth you want your decompressor to use (read on f...

(I've only seen games with CHR-ROM using this trick, because they can easily bankswitch the needed tiles). Actually Battletoads uses that effect for the second level where you're rappelling down the cave. But then again, Battletoads chops off a whole bunch of scanlines, so it has time to do a lot o...

No one's really answered how the CPU and PPU communicate, so I will. The CPU can directly change the PPU by writing to 8 different registers. The registers are at $2000 - $2007 from the perspective of the CPU. The CPU can change the PPU's settings, read the PPU's status, set the scrolling, and write...

I made a collection of CHRs ripped from demos and homebrews. I call it the NESdev Corpus. Here's the download link: http://www.mediafire.com/?tdilw2ghk1g It has nearly 250k of graphics data spread across 14 CHR files. Large (>8k) CHR files have been split into 8k chunks. It also includes a text file...

I also remember playing it on an NES back when it was called Balloon Trip. I don't remember the part in Balloon Trip where you maneuvered a triangle through a field of cubes. Is that a secret mode? And what do you guys suggest for the first project? A platformer or something like that? Once I made ...

I have no idea who that character from South Park is. He's an extreme stereotype of a Jewish boy. He comes to South Park and Kyle (a Jewish friend of Cartman's) makes Cartman promise that he won't make any jokes about him. However, Cartman is unable to resist himself when the teacher points out tha...

I've convinced myself (but I have no idea if this is right) that the tremendously huger market for NTSC sets meant that only CRTs with phosphors meant to be refreshed at 60Hz were findable -- and Europe simply wasn't a big enough market to legitimize research into finding good slower green and blue...

This hasn't been updated in a while, but I just found some docs that I think should be included (though some are already on the main site). Assembly In One Step (this is a great read if you're new to 6502 assembly): http://nesdev.com/6502guid.txt M.J. Malone's DR6502 docs, especially these ones for ...

Thanks for all the compliments! If you want to, go ahead and use the compressor to compress text files for your programs. Be sure to give me credit for the text compressor though. But I have to ask, how many of you have actually used it? It'll work with any file that only has bytes in the range of $...

If you downloaded the file before I made this post, redownload it from the above link. The file I first uploaded had a bug that wouldn't allow you to compress or decompress to a file unless a file already existed with its name. It's fixed now.
