Re: SNESDEV Game Jam Official Announcement

Hey everyone!

Just a reminder that the SNESDEV game jam starts TOMORROW! Nearly 200 people have joined so far, which has completely blown me away. If you haven't already, be sure to check out the jam page and join if you're interested!

Re: SNESDEV Game Jam Official Announcement

I want to give a theme that is open to many different interpretations. Something you'd have to work into your game but that doesn't completely steer what the game should be.

Re: Why don't we have a SNES Game Jam?

Hey everyone,

Expect an official announcement soon. I'm still trying to work through how this will operate, rules, and what to name the dang thing. Let me know if you also have experience organizing this sort of thing and can lend a hand.

Re: Why don't we have a SNES Game Jam?

I don't think that requiring submissions to be open sourced would reduce applicants. But whatever - I will encourage it at the very least.

Everything else sounds great. Could you send over specific spots I should post on?

Re: Why don't we have a SNES Game Jam?

Organizers so far: (... crickets ...) As long as nobody takes responsibility, stuff doesn't happen. (Again, sorry for leaving the thread for a bit. I don't check this forum as much as I should...) I don't have any experience organizing a game jam, but I do have general experience with organizing ev...

Re: What is your process for creating graphics for the SNES?

I couldn't get into Aseprite's interface and then it turned shareware.
I thought Asperite was paid? Or am I missing something?

Re: Why don't we have a SNES Game Jam?

It would be great if someone made like a page or discord with all kinds of tools and such in it. Like music tools, tile map tools, compiler. Materials and resources and would help people make their games. I agree, although it shouldn't be jam-specific. Libsfx contains a pretty decent toolchain to g...

Re: Question about resolution and sprite placement?

I can answer some of these questions. On the snes, data about a sprite is stored in Object Attribute Memory. There are two "sections", each of which store different data. Fullsnes.txt can explain the layout better than I can: Contains data for 128 OBJs. OAM Size is 512+32 Bytes. The first ...

Sorry I've ghosted yall since I posted the thread. I'm glad I could spark this. I'd love to participate as long as the timeframe and technical limitations aren't too restrictive.

Why don't we have a SNES Game Jam?

I've been thinking about this since the N64 game jam a month ago or so. The n64 is extremely niche in terms of homebrew, yet it got a fair amount of applicants anyways. Why don't we do something similar? It would both bring the community together and invite new people into the SNES homebrew scene.

16x32 sprites in interlaced mode?

Right now, my program has an HDMA partway down the screen which turns both interlace mode and 16x32 sprite size on. I understand that this is an undocumented size but I thought it would help cut down on sprite count while still maintaining a good aspect ratio for the metasprite I need to display. In...

Re: Calculating the size of 16x16 tile data.

Thank you all for the help. I ran into an issue initially where the bottom half of my tiles wasn't displaying, but apparently the tiles are $200 bytes per row. Increasing the size of the char data to over $0200 bytes fixed this. Again, thank you - I've never done any programming so rewarding as this!
