How to not hard code sprites

Currently I’m hard coding my sprites. I know, it’s a pretty bad practice, and I’ll soon need to rework a lot of code. So instead of procrastinating I think I’d better get to it as soon as possible. My problem is I don’t have a clue where to start. Or perhaps I do, but I just underestimate the amount...

Re: Structs and arrays - what is best practice?

As for the performance impact of going through the multiple levels of indirection, don't even worry about it if this a one off operation (e.g. loading a new level), there's no way players will notice any difference. Only if you need to do it multiple times per frame will it actually have any impact...

Re: Structs and arrays - what is best practice?

I don't understand. Those arrays have 42 values (tiles). Screens are 32 tiles wide and 30 tiles tall. So, why are there 42 values? Ideally, you would want to compress this more. I see lots of repeated values. What tools are you using? (NES Screen Tool, for example) Sorry for being unclear. The 42 v...

Structs and arrays - what is best practice?

Hi! I am building my first 'game' with a map with single screen rooms. As I've leaned more and more I've done changes to my code to make it as efficient as possible, given my very basic knowlege. Currently my game world concists of multiple layers of indirect addressing. It is probably considered ba...

Problem with pointers refering to palette

Hi! I'm a total newbie in regards to programming in general, but I Think I've managed to get pretty far in my kindergarten understanding of assembler and the behaviour of the hardware. I have also 'graduated' from NESASM to ASM6. My current problem is that the pointers I initialize to the palette an...

Hello NesDev and thanks for existing!

Hello to you all! I’ve been lurking in the shadows for a while, reading the forums until my eyes bleed and learning a lot from your excellent posts. I’m a total noob. Working a lot with VB.NET and Excel macro programming, never touched this kind of stuff (asm) before. However I had this dream of som...
