Re: NES Low-Pass Filter?

Just throwing my two cents in, all of what tepples said is correct to my knowledge, but CRT's with a comb filter are also technically "tuned" to display 480i. Not all CRT's are even created equal in this regard unfortunately. I have a monitor that lets me select which filter I want to use (and also ...

Re: NES Classic Edition - Nintendo's own repro console

So the Wii Mini actually has different ICs than the original Wii and the RVL-101? It's not just pins left unconnected?

Re: NES Classic Edition - Nintendo's own repro console

On a related side note; is there anyone manufacturing new PPU's and 2A03's? Not sure if they're new, and they're certainly not authentic (they've got swapped duty cycles on the square wave channels IIRC), but you can find RP2A03e clones on ebay regularly. For the 2C02, no, no one makes them new, bu...

Re: Super FX Assembler

It is an OS/2 program. I just checked with the unix 'file' utility, and it's an OS/2 program in NE format. $ file ARGOS2.EXE ARGOS2.EXE: MS-DOS executable, NE for OS/2 1.x I installed Windows 2000 in a virtual machine because it has some level of OS/2 compatibility, and the assembler looks to run fi...

Re: Possible issue with my (RF) Famicom console.

I've got a famicom and previously had a top loading NES as well. I found that the noise seemed to be coming from the ram chip just above the PPU's pin 21 on the board (using the extremely scientific method of putting my finger between the pins of the PPU and ram chip to act as a capacitor). No way t...

Re: Anyone Interested in a Combined NES + Gameboy Cart?

I am definitely interested despite already having an EDN8. I'd love to have a cart that actually supports MMC5 and the VRC's properly, and the GB feature sounds fantastic. Would it be possible to make a famicom version? I'd buy a NES one, but it'd be nice to have it not triple the height of my famic...

I'd like to add that Baseball Stars and similar sports games are a dime a dozen and not worth the plastic they're encased in.

Re: Famicom AV - Microphone Restoration

I have a broken famicom that I can test the mic on, but I'll need to know how I should go about testing it. I know that the circuitry still works, everything but the CPU and one of the RAM chips works.

Re: What are your opinions on RF audio on the NES?

That's what I meant. I sometimes hear it (to a lesser extent) in other games, though - I mentioned earth bound, but I've also noticed it in dragon warrior/dragon quest, and games like 'blades of steel' that use PCM. I really need to take a minute to figure out making a low pass filter sometime... Wo...

What are your opinions on RF audio on the NES?

I've been playing a lot of my NES games recently, and some foreign games on my flash cart as well. I've noticed that, while the video quality is terrible, I really like the way that the audio from my NES's RF output sounds. There's much less treble, and I think that NES game designers (especially in...

Re: Powering NES with a ATX PC power supply and no 7805 IC

If you need to know why I want to do this, it is because I have a problem with my everdrive N8, and I want to check if the FPGA on it is simply not receiving enough power. 14 A is overkill for the NES, why not just use a model 1 Sega Genesis power supply? If you need to know why I want to do this, ...

Re: Powering NES with a ATX PC power supply and no 7805 IC

So you did remove the 7805 and connect it in it's place, right?

To clarify: I'm not talking about running through a barrel connector. I mean directly into the NES, bypassing it's internal protections.

Powering NES with a ATX PC power supply and no 7805 IC

Would it be safe to remove the 7805 IC (because it can only safely regulate power with at least 7 volts) and power my NES directly with an old IBM power supply that outputs 5 volts at 14 amps? I know that the 7805 brings it down to 5VDC and I am pretty sure a PC PSU is well regulated. If you need to...

Re: mod to remove need to hold reset?

I have an idea... Put an extra switch (like a reset button from an extra NES) inside the case of the NES, as close to the 'on/off' switch as possible, so that it sits under the large cap on the switch (the thing you press) in a way that when you press the on button both switches are tripped. Since y...

Re: Everdrive - garbled graphics in final fantasy - advice?

I made a commodore 64 PSU once, with a 7805 and a NES 9VAC adapter. If I could power a Commodore 64 with the NES transformer, I would think a NES would be trivial - What am I not accounting for? FPGAs are really power hungry? Oh. Yeah. That. Forgot the huge label "CYCLONE" staring me in the face wh...
