Re: Holy Diver works on Famicom but not on NES

I know there many Famicom to NES converters don't wire all the lines correctly and certain types of nametable mirroring fail to work. Wondering if the problem might be due to your converter rather than something special about the game?

Re: NESert Golfing

I decided to port the game to FDS, just in case someone wants to play it that way. The game isn't any different, it's just rebuilt for the disk format. Download: https://rainwarrior.itch.io/nesert-golfing Source: https://github.com/bbbradsmith/NESertGolfing/tree/fds Also a while back I made a "tourn...

Re: NES dev on retro pc

But even or the era the Apple // was a bad choice, you could get a lot better for a lot less. I think this is an extremely debatable thing to say... very dependent on the specific time and place you want to choose for hardware prices. I'm not about to try and dig up old catalogs to make an argument...

Re: NES dev on retro pc

I was thinking of the Apple //e. Either way it's funny how you're able to program a game that's for a much more powerful system than the one you're writing the code on. That kind of blows my mind I'd consider the Apple IIe as more powerful than the NES where it counts? 128k RAM, swappable storage m...

Re: Sunsoft 5B pin 18

My assumption was that low-SEL on a YM2419 "halves" the clock to permit the 32-step envelopes rather than the 16-step anvelopes of the AY. I haven't yet tested a real YM2149 chip to verify this though. The datasheet description just seems that SEL floating / high = AY compatibility mode. This behavi...

Re: MMC3 with CHR-RAM on specific device.

The basics: MMC3 initialization That's already happening, as mentioned earlier . Everything relevant is initialized, and it runs correctly on Mesen with register-randomization, as well as every other emulator tested, PowerPak and Everdrive. There's a link to the ROM build in that post, and you can ...

Re: MMC3 with CHR-RAM on specific device.

So you've verified that the ROM works and runs some code. It's clear that it's setting the nametable data. Try reducing your main() to just the minimum needed. Maybe just clear the nametable to 0 and try to write some simple pattern to CHR tile 0. Don't do any PRG switching, just verify that you can...

Re: Namco 163 audio?

It always seemed that the games that used 8-channel audio were meant to get most of the whine rolled off through the RF signal process. It doesn't seem like anyone would want to emulate that way, because why would you, but that kinda dictates that a non-accurate compromise should be used instead, at...

Re: MMC3 with CHR-RAM on specific device.

Put a breakpoint on writes to $4020-$FFFF (i.e. writes that could affect the mapper) and see if you spot it doing anything unusual up until the point the first graphics are properly displayed. Do that with both ROMs you are comparing, make a log of all the writes. See if anything stands out as unusu...

My response wasn't meant to be taken as hostile, just realistic. :S

I'd be happy to do work like this for someone who puts enough value on it. If you don't really think it's worth that much then I can only wish good luck.

Re: In Search of 6502/Turbo Game Doctor 6M+ Hacking Expert.

Do you know how to make TGD6M+ rom hacks? I have not worked with TGD6M+ before but I have plenty enough relevant knowledge and experience to say: yes, I absolutely could. My friend that makes only needed a handful of hours per game. A "handful of hours" sounds like a day of work to me. For any reas...

Re: In Search of 6502/Turbo Game Doctor 6M+ Hacking Expert.

I'm sure many games can be converted to work on the TGD6, and many probably just can't. Depending on the game it might be a day of work, or it might be a week, or several weeks. These things are pretty hard to estimate... a lot of the time it would take you as long to figure out how long the work sh...

Re: MMC3 with CHR-RAM on specific device.

Another thought: change one byte in the Mega Man 4 ROM and see if it still runs? Might want to rule out that the emulator is relying on a database of CRCs to select the cart function. Any recommendation for a specific program that works on mac for patching it out? You could just open it with a hex ...
