Looking for ideas with my pirate-themed game
I'm working on a game. It's cartoony and pirate-themed; kid-friendly kind of stuff. I'm not satisfied with my ideas for an offensive mechanic, and I thought I'd bring this up and see if anyone has any thoughts on the matter. The player is being chased by ghost-pirates. The player is supposed to evad...

Family Basic for the NES: Could it have been?
I have heard about the Family Basic for the Famicom, but I've heard very little about it. But I understand it allowed users to create "Basic games" for the NES (I assume they mean Basic as in the programming language) and that fact intrigues me. Had such an accessory been released for the ...

Re: What was this old computer game I vaguely recall?
Hmm, that may have been it.
Thank you.
Although I also seem to recall seeing a second game that was similar; the guy who had the game had two different games that he showed me.
But that part of my memory is so particularly vague that I wouldn't put too much trust in it.

What was this old computer game I vaguely recall?
I remember seeing a game on someone's computer way back in the day, I think it was in the early 90's but the game might have been older. I have no idea what kind of computer it was, but I seem to recall the game running in black and white. Maybe it was four color grayscale; I don't know. I just reca...

Re: Trying to devise some ways to extend my gameplay
multiplayer competitive block off passages trap other players near monsters while you race for treasure Sounds like Bomberman :) Glad I'm not the only one who saw that. ;) Honestly I thought of adding bombs into my game, but I couldn't figure out how to keep it from just becoming Bomberman. I mean,...

Re: Super Mario 64 performance enhancement
Hacking Mario 64 at that level, adding a two-player mode, huge levels, or Odyssey mechanics or whatever, it really feels to me not a good use of time, spending so much effort on something illegal. Making a custom, original 2p 3d platformer with huge levels shouldn't be beyond him by now. Just my op...

Re: How does Castlevania 3 render the character switch animation?
So it's just timing its bank switching to go on specific scanlines?
I suppose that isn't too hard since it freezes gameplay, but that still has to be done manually...

Trying to devise some ways to extend my gameplay
I'm working on a very simple project; it's basically a Pacman clone. I'm trying to devise some ways to expand the gameplay to make it more interesting. Not necessarily something complex, but just to add a little bit of flavor. Right now the game feels too boring; it's going to wear out its welcome t...

Re: How did they create franchise tie-in games?
Or their characters can't be violent, when the whole series is nothing but slapstick so one must use a Key because those are safe and non violent. Star Trek games are not allowed to depict a death of any character from the show, even as a "failure" condition. That's why you have character...

Re: How did they create franchise tie-in games?
Konami liked Turtles for some reason, they made all the games back then and revived it yet again years later for Game Boy Advance (which is also a good game). " For some reason " I mean, I don't know what their actual sales figures were, but from what I saw when I was a kid, (that is, jud...

How did they create franchise tie-in games?
Yesterday I was looking at the original TMNT game on the NES. While there is a lot I could say about it, one thing in particular stands out to me right now. From what I read, the release of this game predates any release of Ninja Turtle media in Japan, yet as far as I can tell, this was developed in...

As a kid, I never understood the difference in time...
It was only this week that I realized that after Super Mario Bros 3 came out in the US, it was less than a year before Super Mario World came out. And yeah, it was still another year (almost) after that before the SNES came out in the US, and it would be another year after that before I manage to bu...

Re: What would you change about the NES?
What types of things could have made the NES/Famicom more competitive (if any)? Would a better NES have sacrificed future sales of SNES? Heck, the NES didn't have a whole lot of competition. Maybe they should have made it worse and cheaper to get a bigger base and drive up the SNES? But a worse NES...

Re: What would you change about the NES?
If we are to follow the same specs to keep cost the same or lower I think I would keep the 2 kB VRAM but make a single nametable that is a bit larger than the visible screen like on the Game Boy. That way seamless scrolling could be done in all directions very easily and with better use of the VRAM...
