Re: NEXXT - a newer "NES Screen Tool"

2.1.4 is up, and it's a pretty important bugfix. Various open/save .chr actions were bugged, leading to potential loss of data. Beside that, i've reduced the cases where redundant cpu load may happen at inconvenient times while working with the Navigator and metatile clonestamp on huge maps. It need...

Re: NEXXT - a newer "NES Screen Tool"

You're right - the option 'none' is bugged when pressing OK. It's now fixed and will be in the next minor update.

Edit: 2.1.3 is up.

Basically just the above fix + minor cosmetics

Re: NEXXT - a newer "NES Screen Tool"

I've addressed some of these issues now, and v2.1 is up. -There's now a simple user-set default subpalettes system, explained in the changelog. -Ascii offset drag-control behaves more consistently now, and may be dragged in either direction. -Type in mode handles shift 1...4 and altGr 1...4 correctl...

Re: NEXXT - a newer "NES Screen Tool"

Thanks! 1) I wonder if this might be an issue different from system to system or at least mouse sensitivity.. anyway, dragging sets coarse offset (in increments of 16 / $10), and holding shift while dragging sets it in finer steps of 1. In addition, you can set a base offset from the menu; Edit > Ty...

Re: WideNES proposal for cross-releasing NES games on modern platforms

While I like this concept, I think in practicality this requires new level design or really, a unique ROM unlike the standard Famicom release. And since this is trying to make releasing a modern homebrew easier, I argue this just doesn't seem like the ideal solution, since it requires R&D time ...

Re: WideNES proposal for cross-releasing NES games on modern platforms

Another option - since the "real" NES version can't be designed around displaying content on all 240 scanlines, levels must be designed around a reduced height being visible. Say 216 scanlines, because it's exactly 1/5 of 1080. 216 rows at 16:9 DAR would be 384x216 source for square pixel...

Re: WideNES proposal for cross-releasing NES games on modern platforms

To me, it's a matter of how coarse the interpolation needs to be for the given screen resolution. GB and GBA are within the same whole factor of upscale, so the effect would naturally be quite evident/bad. It's a whole other thing when the lowest screen resolution in use on modern consoles (switch r...

Re: WideNES proposal for cross-releasing NES games on modern platforms

Here's my preliminary test for 336, first with square pixels and then stretched with 8:7 PAR. https://frankengraphics.files.wordpress.com/2024/02/1111.png Now 8:7: https://frankengraphics.files.wordpress.com/2024/02/bicubic.png There's 2 things i like about 8:7. Firstmost, it *feels* a bit more like...

Re: WideNES proposal for cross-releasing NES games on modern platforms

On another matter, is there a particularly good reason to lock it to precisely 3 ppu cycles per cpu cycle? Here's my findings what that'd entail: Take the nintendo switch's screen; it is 1280x720. For game content to look good, it should ideally be upscaled with an integer and nearest neighbor. That...

Re: WideNES proposal for cross-releasing NES games on modern platforms

I was thinking of this problem just yesterday on my own. The way i see it, differentiating the game for release on switch/xbox etc is potentially more commercially viable when going to kickstarter than a letterboxed offering. Suffice it to say, if there is going to be a Wide NES standard, i'll do my...

Re: NEXXT - a newer "NES Screen Tool"

So, i should've lead with a more humble "in my practice, 'toggle undo' is a more frequent action for pixel art". When undo history started becoming norm in raster editors, toggle undo tended to get demoted to a subcommand. This makes a lot of sense in photo editing, where to reach a goal y...

Re: NEXXT - a newer "NES Screen Tool"

Glad you've found it useful! Bucket fill: -Exists! For the CHR edtor, or while in free draw mode, hold ctrl and click. For tile-fill on screen, make a selection on the screen canvas (shift-click-drag), and press F. You may want to consult the cheat sheet png:s included to discover more similar actio...
