Re: What's the deal with missing content in Game Boy games?

I think the main reason was most likely budget-related issues. Also, Game Boy cartridges (starting from 1991 or so) have an average size of 128kb (before that, 32kb and 64kb were much more common, with 128kb being used for some "larger" games, and at least one 256kb cartridge (Gauntlet II)), as oppo...

Re: GBS Request

Guess what? This forum is active again! Somehow, just somehow, I managed to rip the audio of some games that nobody had ever done before! These are also my first GBS rips, as these were more of a hack than anything else. Still can't figure out how to deal with multi-bank games. Two of these games we...

Re: Is NES/Famicom detection possible?

I only heard of one commercial game actually trying to detect NTSC and PAL and be dual compatible like that. And it's an unlicensed game. Several games (mostly unlicensed) have a feature like this. Supposedly Super Turrican (only released in PAL region, but supposedly a US prototype exists which is...

Byte-swap tool for Windows?

Hi, I understand this isn't necessarily related to the NES, but this is "General Stuff", right? :D Basically, I've been in need of a program that can byte-swap files from start to end (big-endian to little-endian and vice versa). I am using a hex editor, but it doesn't seem to be able to do such a t...

Re: How are PCM samples ripped from NES ROMS?

Skate or Die 2 is the one that comes to mind first. SoD2's samples are 4-bit linear PCM (or as linear as the APU DMC DAC allows). Years ago, I wrote an extractor that turns the whole ROM into a wave file; it shouldn't be too hard to write your own if you know any PC programming language. I forget w...

How are PCM samples ripped from NES ROMS?

Earlier, I tried to ask a similar question about GBC ROMS that I was having trouble with, but nobody answered (it should be somewhere on GBDev, so feel free to help if you are interested and have the skill), so I thought I'd make a much more relevant topic here. Basically, in general, how are PCM sa...

Re: More NSF Requests

Rerripped, added lookuptable and some SFXs. Sorry to bother you, but there's actually THREE versions of Defender of the Crown: one NTSC (US), one UK (PAL) and one French (also PAL), so it shouldn't just be labeled (SFX). Is DOTC very hard to rip, or is the sound data between all three versions iden...

Re: Blank main menu in Spot (that 7up game)

This exact problem happens on the GCW Zero emulator "OhBoy". So I have to use Gambatte to run the game. :( "Just to be clear, there are actually 2 different 7-Up games. "Spot: The Cool Adventure" and "Cool Spot". I assume we're talking about the 1st one, but both games work in my emulator." There ar...

Re: GBS Request

Othello (Current rip is buggy and missing tracks IIRC) Here's proper one. I somehow enjoy those 32k games with code, player, songs and gfx scattered all over the space. Thanks a bunch! The Main board BGM is still glitched tho. https://youtu.be/zTp63Xse4TE?t=14s And if you re-rip it, can you rip the...

Automated GBS ripper!

Note that I did not make this tool. I found this on some website in 2015, which was mirrored from a now-dead(?) website from 2010. What I have here is GBGBS, a which claims to be able to rip music (and most times sound effects) from Game Boy and Game Boy Color ROMs, and it truly is capable of it. Ba...

Re: List of NES and Famicom games that use raw PCM (7-bit, e

As I said before, the sample saying "The Adventures of Bayou Billy." is definitely just DPCM. No, it absolutely is not DPCM. It's writing $4011 roughly every 86 cycles for the duration of that sound. Listen, I don't need to argue about this, but... I know it's DPCM (the encoding) because I could co...

Re: List of NES and Famicom games that use raw PCM (7-bit, e

Ah, The Bayou Billy one triggers after pressing start to start the game. So technically after the title screen in that case. I missed the other examples from Blades of Steel, I probably only checked "get the pass" and assumed the rest were going to be DPCM as well. Good find. As I said before, the ...

Re: GBS Request

As well as those, could you also rip these ROMs as well? None of these have been ripped as far as I know. Some of these games have terrible music, but I would love to see a GBS rip of them. - Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (U) [!] - Blues Brothers, The - Jukebox Adventure (U) {Warning: sound emulatio...

Re: Least favorite game genre?

Modern? Yeah, I totally agree with you on the FPS thing. If we're talking about retro games though, I'd have to say RPGs. I can't possibly understand how anyone can see the insanely repetitive task that is fighting the same enemies over and over (using menus, instead of proper character control!) j...
