The review "Halloween ‘86 came from the NES to the Nintendo Switch" by Terry Jeffryes points out a narrow first that this game has achieved. It appears to be the first new game since Wario's Woods in 1994 to see both an NES cartridge release and a licensed release on some Nintendo platform.

... from manufacturers? Animated backgrounds don't technically need MMC3, as you can stuff tiles into CHR RAM during idle vblank time. The Curse of Possum Hollow does this because only 16 tiles of each background can be animated (in 2 groups of 8, one group per vblank).
