Re: NES 2.0 XML Database

These "modern re-releases" are included in the next database update, whenever that happens. Still busy adding hacks and translations.

Re: 4-screen mirroring in Gauntlet

Sachen's Zhongguo Daheng uses six nametables --- four tables using additional VRAM on the circuit board for the playfield, and the two nametables in the console for the user interface, switched at appropriate times (mapper 512). Given how unimpressive the game is, this hardware configuration surely ...

Re: What was that kind of Region in Nes?

You had a Dendy-like console with a CPU/APU revision affected by the duty cycle bug. Basically, the 50% and 25% duty cycles are swapped, so that the games don't sound as the composer intended. Mesen emulates it: choose Options->Audio->Advanced->Swap square channels duty cycles. NintendulatorNRS emul...

Re: Sharp Famicom Titler

Thanks, that answers the battery question. Chris Covell, who has since sold his unit, had dumped the 512 KiB PRG-ROM; the software works either in a SUROM or an SXROM configuration. So the only remaining question is the amount of PRG-RAM. My write log indicates no SXROM-like WRAM bank-switching writ...

Sharp Famicom Titler

How much PRG-RAM does it have? Does it use a battery? I cannot tell from the few inside pictures that I can find online.

Re: NES 2.0 XML Database

That indicates that your ROM file of both games each is missing the CHR part and only has the PRG part. FDS disk image files have no header that is meaningful aside from indicating the number of sides. No such database is therefore needed for FDS games. Note that Nes20DB is a database of headers , n...

Re: NES 2.0 XML Database

Added many homebrew ROMs as well as some ROM hacks, and corrected the mirroring information on the Oeka Kids games. (NesCartDB incorrectly claims that mirroring is mapper-controlled, but it's not.) Amended the description of the "mirroring" field to include the meanings in the two mappers 30 and 218...

What does that mean? Is Forever DUO 852 Games of NES a Coolgirl cartridge, then? Because the bank register writes do not look like it.

Unemulated problem in Alien Syndrome (J)

The script "THE BATTLE HAS JUST BEGUN" flickers on real hardware, including when using an Everdrive N8, but not in any emulators that I have tried. What is the game doing, and why does it flicker?

Edit: Apparently, the U.S. version from Tengen does not suffer from this problem.

Re: Mesen - NES Emulator

You have not fully grasped the point of his objection: a database cannot contain anything that a NES 2.0 header cannot. No NES 2.0 header can specify an MMC3 board that uses single-screen mirroring in the way that this so-called "MMC3 hack of Metal Force" would require. You are asking for the databa...

Re: NES 2.0 XML Database

A Python script has been written (not by me) for that purpose. As NES 2.0 is designed to be backwards-compatible to standard iNES headers, there is no separate database for that purpose.

Re: Does the NES color palette actually vary more than the SNES on TV sets?

I actually do not find the NES colors hard-to-emulate at all. Given a correct description of a television's YIQ/YUV decoding matrix, its phosphor CIE chromaticities, I can reproduce the look of all color of a given console revision quite accurately. Remaining difficulties lie in varying expectations...
