Re: TV System byte extension in iNES, NES 2.0, UNIF, NSF, NS

I oppose, because of one criterion: the header should be unambiguous; every game should have one header with values that are correct for that game, with any other being incorrect. That allows "good" ROMs to have one unambiguous CRC32 including the header. All the current and proposed fields meet th...

Re: Article on Game Graphics w/ Details on Era Workstations

I think the article author was trying, imprecisely, to make a distinction between a computer monitor and a television. The computers on which the graphics were being digitized were often connected to CRTs with a sharper picture screen and a higher quality connection than the television next to them....

Re: Are homebrew devs "accessories" to Nintendo's aggression

To that poster, anyone who supports Nintendo by buying or using any of its products, past or present, is an accessory to their oppression. Nintendo cannot survive on nostalgia alone, it must produce new products for customers to sell. When it turns to its classic game library, we get avenues to spen...

So it is, I meant mapper 148. I have fixed the assignments, so please redownload. Thank you for pointing out the issue.

Re: List of NES and Famicom Cartridge Hardware

New revision to the list, now at 1.3. This time I included a relatively new feature of NES 2.0, controller support. I tried to be as comprehensive as I could be, researching from multiple sources. I hope I haven't missed anything. I also redesignated any unlicensed Mapper 3 game that supports more t...

Re: How to develop games on Nintedo Vs. Dual System

I dislike using MAME, the latest versions of Mesen and Nintendulator-NRS support Vs. Dual System pretty well. Now if only they supported PlayChoice-10 as well

Re: NES 2.0 Additions Proposal

[*] Block Set differs from Gyromite in that the main game really does take place off the game screen. There's no point in emulating that. I only included Gyromite because Nestopia has an emulation for it, and because it makes a bit of sense for that game. I did not understand how ROB emulation work...

Re: NES 2.0 Additions Proposal

I think we may need to add a few peripherals to the list. Let me explain the reasons why : 1. R.O.B. Block Set Used for Robot Block/Stack-Up. One of the modes of this game is a puzzle mode where you have to place the blocks in a certain pattern and get ROB to move them until it matches the pattern s...

Re: List of NES and Famicom Cartridge Hardware

Now I am using version numbers to keep track of changes. This is the third post of the spreadsheet, so I'm calling it v1.2. The biggest change is that I have moved Japanese names into a new column and added them where they were missing. A few errors were fixed in the process. I was also able to trac...

Re: List of NES and Famicom Cartridge Hardware

Bootgod's XML had the information I used except where it was either incorrect or not present. My spreadsheet was intended to separate the chaff from the wheat, in other words what is needed for emulation vs. what is interesting from the perspective of board manufacturing.

A few issues with the database : Olympus no Tatakai: Ai no Densetsu - Database claims this game has W-RAM, but it's U.S. counterpart, Battle of Olympus, does not. Both versions write to W-RAM after starting a new game or continuing an old game, but they do not read from it. Business Wars: Database c...

Re: Mesen - NES Emulator

"A competitor, Sega of America, said it isn't feeling the effects of the shortage as greatly because it relies more heavily on different memory chips." As far as I know, Sega used 8KB and 16KB RAM in its Master System console and cartridges, similar to Nintendo. The Master System used "XRAM" which ...

Re: Mesen - NES Emulator

OT: This mapper sure caught me by surprise. And while I2C is generally something I'm familiar with ( I write stuff using SMBus ), I sure didn't expect to see it on a Famicom cartridge. I would bet hard cash this was done to save money; the Bandai games that had this implemented were from 1990 (poss...

It works pretty well with the English Translation. I did notice the status bar jump occasionally when scrlling the screen vertically in the first town and later in the first temple.

Re: Detecting Cartridge RAM

Sure, 10 years and 3 volts probably makes a bit of a difference there. ;) Arcade games did it all the time too, of course, but a battery was a relatively small expense for those... but even then a lot of arcade games omitted it. I think you can chalk it down to 10 years and Tetris DX being a first-...
