Re: Character Diversity in *your/our/modern* NES Games

Samus could have been anyone until she took her helmet off. ;) ...and then she stripped as a reward for the player. Although likely corrected in later entries, the original Metroid is a poor defending example of gender representation in games. :) Also, I've frequently referenced the randomly genera...

Re: 2016 Compo Entry Progress Thread - Run 'n' Gun

Just realized I had a typo in those character names ( Run n Run , haha). Corrected. Love to see a Contra parody. Just have to say that also parodying Stallone and Schwarzenegger seems ...uninspired for lack of a better word. (what about Carl Weathers?) Even if it is a mini-project, something ...

Re: 2016 Compo Entry Progress Thread - Run 'n' Gun

Took it to a new thread so as not to derail this one. I've been long meaning to start conversation here about the subject anyway.

Character Diversity in *your/our/modern* NES Games

As part of the small group of developers for the NES, what thoughts do you put towards diversity in your games? Are there Only Six Black NES Characters in Existence? NES Female Protagonists ----Continued from a previous thread... ... (to darryl.revok) Also, have you considered a different race/ethni...

Re: 2016 Compo Entry Progress Thread - Run 'n' Gun

Please tell me Run n Gun is short for: Clarence "Run" Rundstrom & Gunthar "Gun" Washington, or the like. Also, have you considered a different race/ethnicity/gender for your players? I think in 2016, correcting the dominance of white male protagonists in NES games should be taken into consideration....

Re: Vigilante Ninja (edit)

Those hue shifts help a lot. I didn't even touch the palette with my paintover. Foliage is a big improvement too (although he definitely wouldn't want background foliage to overlap midground trees, but I assume that's not intended.) As for the ground plane, I'm a big fan of showing a cross section. I...

Re: Vigilante Ninja (edit)

Also, forgot to mention that I quite like the background as it reminds me of Legend of Kage.

Re: Vigilante Ninja (edit)

The stone is flat compared to the trees, which are rounded. Your lighting direction, as indicated by the trees, is from front-left. Tree bark is textured, so the jagged patterns work fine there. In contrast, the stone may read better with solid shapes instead of a jagged texture. It is also confusin...

Re: Clean-Up Crew

I really like the head wobbling. Have you thought about bringing into the horizontal walk animation? This is a really messy edit I put together to show it.

Re: Clean-Up Crew

Love the lightbulb changing animation. A lot of character there. Earlier you mentioned an inconsistency between the vertical walking and horizontal walking animations. That may be because in the vertical walk, the character rotates his head side-to-side, but in the horizontal walk, he bobs it front-...

Re: Issue with evening background color

Actually, I think if I were to go about this, I'd probably reduce the total color count and go with roughly monochromatic backgrounds to reduce visual competition with the foreground, also taking a nod from Drag's orange fog suggestion at the sunset: This would free up a dedicated HUD palette as well.

Re: Issue with evening background color

I wouldn't make the skyscraper red, though. It's cyan in the other levels and it's supposed to be the same building, so it cannot be bright red here. I didn't notice this earlier. If you want to imply that the cyan (I assume #0C & #1C) buildings are lit by an orange sky, #08 & $19 (warm olive-ish, ...

Re: Issue with evening background color

Using Drag's suggestion as the basis, with the primary purpose of giving the fog a relatively warmer hue (which would bring it into the lavender range), I've come up with the following: Disregard subtle differences. The NEStopia YUV palette is what I keep loaded in my Photoshop swatches, so this use...

Re: Vigilante Ninja (edit)

To be honest, I don't have much experience doing animation. I agree with Darryl's assessments of the title screen. I've animated a lot of flame effects for Pyronaut. I suggest watching slow-motion vids on Youtube of fires similar to what you want. Also, here's a quality animation cycle to reference...

Re: People to do voices in games

You could hire a voice actor (local university theater department would be my first go). I did for an animation project in uni, turned out okay and fit my budget at the time.
