Re: Planning

I feel that there should be some kind of category denoting how remarkable something's code is. Something that would net a 5/5 for CatQuest's AI/room compression, or a 5/5 for Battletoad's insane vblank handling (large amount of ppu updates, tons of tricky raster timing). As a newbie I really love to...

CHR RAM and the Kazzo (Paging INL!)

Currently I am unaware of any sellers for flashable boards with CHR RAM! Specifically I'm looking for AxROM, mapper 7. Infinite Nes Lives is who I'm most comfortable doing business with, but seeing as how the site doesn't sell AxROMs right now is there anyone else to turn to? Ideally something I can...

Re: Foreshortening is hard

You'd really want to use a bright colour for the sword, not this dark gray. Also, the combination sword is up before attacking, and down after, works fine for my game. Didn't comment before because I was in a hurry and had to be somewhere, but the one on the left in "couple more tries.png" looks fi...

Re: Clean-Up Crew

If you're doing NROM this might be asking a bit much, but what if the walking up/down animations got just a few more tiles each to give him a symmetrical frame? Right now the hat jumps a little when it goes from one side of his head to the other. I think one more tile could be mirrored and give the ...

Re: 2016 Compo Entry Progress Thread - Run 'n' Gun

It's encouraging to see a fellow newbie with a project of similar-ish ambition to mine who's made a similar amount of progress so far. I gotta draw more sprites!

Also, I like your homage to the smiling cigar man from Contra.

Re: Foreshortening is hard

What's wrong with the one on the left? That's what I like to hear. Excellent, I was hoping it looked so good. As far as designs on the shield goes: I want to, but I'm not going to touch that yet. Right now I'm going for a really barren look until I've got much, much more of the game drawn out and c...

Re: Foreshortening is hard

Have you tried modeling your character in Blender 3D to get the angles right? I tried it for pictures that I posted to this topic . Or would that be cheating? That's a really interesting way of doing things. I might take a weekend to learn blender and see what kinds of results I can produce. Someti...

Foreshortening is hard

Longtime pixel art hobbyist, never messed with nes sprites till recently... I don't have a ton of work to show off or anything right yet, but can someone give me some foreshortening tips as it applies to low res pixel art? I'm really struggling to get this character's sword to look good if he holds ...

Re: Causes for erroneous scroll changes?

Battletoads keeps rendering disabled at the top of the screen (before status bar) to get more time for updates. The amount of extra blanking can even change for each level. That's something I've heard before. But, unless I'm very confused, my rendering is disabled until my ppu updates are all finis...

Re: Causes for erroneous scroll changes?

Scanlines 0-239 = rendering. Scanlines 240+ = v-blank Scanlines in FCEUX's debugger unfortunately don't indicate timing while out of the active picture. Certainly once it becomes 0 (after having been 239), rendering has restarted. Well... yeah, it's spilling out of VBlank. Just friggin barely. Whic...

Re: Causes for erroneous scroll changes?

Make sure that your vblank handler isn't overflowing into the active drawing portion of the screen; at that point $2005 and $2006 start behaving differently. This is good information but... I'm not sure if I'm spilling out of vblank or not. I don't really understand the 'scanline' information on th...

Causes for erroneous scroll changes?

Hi again. I'm working on what I'd call an advanced animation routine, and it's come along so nicely, but... for some reason each time the animation loops, the vertical scrolling is knocked down for a single frame. I've been using FCEUX's debugger to set breakpoints on writing to $2005, because that'...

Re: NesDev compo 2016

I think the reason Tepples said AOROM would be part of the "anything goes" category is because AOROM boards support 128/256 and only 64KB is compatible Hey, speaking of which... A category with a mandatory "theme", such as a harsh size limit or playing as a bee, would probably not be popular enough...
