NES handheld
I'm thinking about buying one of those handheld devices that can play NES cartridges. Since I have no experience with it, can you tell me which one is the best? (Only the ones that play actual cartridges. I don't mean the emulator-based handhelds. And for NTSC games.)

Re: NES handheld
A decade ago, a friend had gotten a Game Axe as a birthday present. It was ... passable? The screen quality was lousy (viewing angle, contrast ratio) and battery life was about what you could expect for an early backlit color screen device. I didn't know to listen for the duty cycle bug, and I don't remember whether his copy of Tengen's Gauntlet worked correctly although I kinda think it did.
Re: NES handheld
So, I take it that the Game Axe is just mediocre?

Re: NES handheld
It's certainly fair to say that I wasn't impressed. I don't know how good any of the others are, though.

Soz, didn't see. May I ask why not? Is it legality or something?DRW wrote:DRW wrote:Only the ones that play actual cartridges. I don't mean the emulator-based handhelds.
Re: NES handheld
He said he wanted to play carts. But if you were to get an open handheld like that, there are better choices. My first pick would be: http://www.gcw-zero.com/WedNESday wrote:Dude, get one of this if you can. They can play everything.

Re: NES handheld
GP2X would be fine if it can 1. dump carts, including new retrousb and INL releases, and 2. automatically learn new mappers.
GCW Zero's button layout is strange. X and Y are where they are on Dreamcast and Xbox family, but A and B are where they are on Super NES, DS family, and Wii Classic Controller family.

Re: NES handheld
I never got around to buying my GCW Zero (my Dingoo A320 is still running strong), but the emulators on the Linux version it runs should be mostly the same. The buttons are remappable, so A-B and X-Y labeling is not much of an issue. On the right-most buttons, I always set North to Y, East to X, South to A, and West to B. Strange, but it mimics how many PS game are set up (X to confirm, Square to cancel, Triangle for menus, Circle for other stuff).
The GP2X has a number of emulators available for it, so you can always check their wiki to see what each one is and get an idea of what it'll support. I know the OP isn't interested in these kind of devices, but it never hurts to know things, you know?

Re: NES handheld
I'm the kinda person who learnt the 4 button right hand setup first as a SNES player. So regardless of which controller I'm using, A is the the right with X at the top...tepples wrote:GCW Zero's button layout is strange. X is in all four positions.WedNESday wrote:So regardless of which controller I'm using, A is the the right with X at the top...
