How's this for an original homebrew game idea...

Arizona Jones and the Shrine of Misfortune.

And the sequel...

Arizona Jones and the Reliquary Thieves

It's about a rogue archeologist who, for some reason, carries a whip. The enemy is Nazis. No that's a bit too obvious. Um...Eritrean Defence Forces...too obscure?

Link to Eritrean crimes against humanity..

Sort of a Pitfall meets Castlevania. What do you think?

You know what's weird, there's like a dozen real things named 'Arizona Jones'.

-an Indiana Jones impersonator
-a band from Arizona
-a character on 'Fresh Beat Band of Spies'
-etc.

I thought I came up with a clever spoof name.

There's already a retro Indiana Jones spoof: http://www.msxgamesworld.com/gamecard.php?id=2354

This is true for every state, really. Every state had Indiana Jones fans who would consider replacing Indiana with their own.

Georgia Jones.
Montana Jones.
Rhode Island Jones.
New Hampshire Jones.
New Mexico Jones.

I like these names a LOT more than Indiana Jones.

I think you're a few years too late:

By the company that brought you "Castlevania".

Oh, right, you said homebrew. O.k.:

Also for NES.

Does anyone else have any other ideas for homebrew games?

My current ideas...
-Mario Paint music game for NES
-Zelda clone with sci-fi twist
-3d world runner style game (run forward, jump over holes, avoid obstacles)
-a maniac mansion style game that is essentially one big puzzle, find objects and use them in the correct room, dialog with characters, readable clues, etc.

Do you mean games we want to make eventually, even if the ideas aren't exactly original? That's what I'm getting from your list.

There are a few things I always wanted to release on the NES... None of them are particularly innovative, except for being on the NES:

1- 360° physics speed platformer: You know, the genre started by Sonic the Hedgehog, which inspired a multitude of clones. Analyzing the feasibility of such a game is the first thing I do whenever I study the technical specs of any machine, so that really is some kind of benchmark for me! I see no reason for this genre to not work on the NES, and hopefully I'll be able to prove this soon!

2- First-person shooter (raycaster): I already made an engine that was fast enough for a game, but adding objects/enemies could slow it down below acceptable levels, and the horizontal resolution is pretty bad. I have a few ideas on how to double the resolution, but I need scanline IRQs and memory for 4 name tables. And a lot more room for look-up tables in order to keep the performance acceptable even after adding objects/enemies. I really want to do this.

3- Point and click adventure: The NES has a few of these, but their graphics are very uncharismatic. I want to make something that looks more like Day of the Tentacle (PC), Scooby Doo Mystery (Genesis), or even The Fish Files (GBC), with their crooked backgrounds. That would be a challenge on the NES and its 4 background palettes, but I'd like to try.

4- FMV sequences: FMV games are pretty boring, but regular games with a couple of FMV sequences to spice things up can be pretty interesting. I'd like to finish designing a video format that could be used on the NES for short video sequences, and I'd like to animate something cool for at least one game.

How about a game where just take a bunch of poops on a toilet. Restroom Simulator!

Perhaps Diarrhea Dan?
...or maybe P if you'd allow one bodily function to substitute for another.

Ok, get the kickstarter page going. I bet by this time next year you'll be up to $10,000.

I shudder to imagine what the 'rewards' might be.

I thought it would be interesting to try and make a "movie" on the NES. Something that has the style of the typlical RPG for the system - 4-way scrolling, Text box dialog, a huge cast of characters, and a plot that develops over time - only without interaction from the player. Basically everything that happens would be data hard-coded into the game from the "script", like a cutscene, only it would essentially be one long cutscene for the entire game.
