Where is a my topic with invite
Where is a my topic with invite? Hmm i cant find it now ;/ wizz
Re: Where is a my topic with invite
A moderator might have deleted it. Here are things for a new user to avoid if you don't want a future post to be deleted:
- Off-topic post
- External links selling something, in the post or in the signature
- Phrasing that resembles advertisement copy
- Text spinning, as if someone went through the text of an ad with a thesaurus in order to disguise turns of phrase
- Posts not in the English language outside the designated foreign-language forums
Re: Where is a my topic with invite
You're going way too easy on the spambot...
For me, it's an IP ban immediately, then a subnet ban after the second offense.

Re: Where is a my topic with invite
That's assuming it's even possible to use IP address bans - last I checked, the forum was behind an HTTPS proxy and its code wasn't modified to be aware of that proxy, so banning any single user by IP address had the result of banning everybody.
There's also the fact that most spambots are probably coming from botnets (where each one does a single round of spamming and then never comes back), so it's doubtful that bans would even work in the first place.

Re: Where is a my topic with invite
Which is why nobody should even answer those guys to begin with.
The first post of the user was deleted due to spam. And he has spam in his signature.
So, when he comes back and asks why his first post was deleted instead of contributing anything on-topic to the forum: Just delete his second post as well, without comment. Maybe he will get it by then.
After all, do the moderators really need to explain themselves and be fair to spammers?

Re: Where is a my topic with invite
I have a habit of trying to help people understand what not to do in case novices acting in good faith might be reading a given exchange. I suspect it might be related to having seen my own early posts to various forums in the past modded down or deleted before I got a feel for the norms of each community in which I have participated.
Re: Where is a my topic with invite
You think a spammer who advertises for commerial websites or products (and therefore most likely works for a company, why else should he be interested in doing it) is simply a newbie to internet forums and is acting in good faith?
So, when a vacuum cleaner salesman stands in front of your door, do you invite him in under the premise that he might be just your new neighbor who's simply unaware that trying to sell you his own used vacuum cleaner comes off as being a salesman who tries to sell new vacuum cleaners?

Re: Where is a my topic with invite
I don't think the spammer is acting in good faith. I think other people reading this may be acting in good faith.
Re: Where is a my topic with invite
O.k., but if you think this thread might serve as an advice for newbies on how to behave on a forum, you must be under the impression that "newbie who spams ads for sex pills or online gambling in good faith" is a thing. Which I find pretty unlikely.
On the other hand, a newbie who's just generally annoying by being immature, demanding, repetitive or whatever will surely not learn anything from the message "don't post spam links" because it doesn't apply to him in the first place.
Hence, a spam thread can be deleted without warning.
As far as the spammer goes: We don't need to be fair to them. He wonders why his thread was deleted?
"You know damn well why we deleted your thread, so don't play dumb. We did it because you're an asshole, that's why. And that's why we delete your second thread as well, asshole. We don't negotiate with spammers."
And as far as the obnoxious 12 year old newbie goes: Even if he's capable of learning, there's no reason why he should ever apply this kind of thread as an example for himself.
Hence, I approve of the deletion of spam threads and of follow-up "Why was my thread deleted? (asked the Chinese corporate employee)" threads.

Re: Where is a my topic with invite
Some newbies might not have noticed the author was the same one who posted those spam threads. They'll just see 'Where is a my topic with invite' and relate to the general feeling of being unwelcomed, unaware of what the author was doing.
Newbies who are generally annoying could gradually become link spammers without knowing it if they have made something and want to promote it in any way they can.
If someone knows the answer to a question like this, what's the point of asking it?DRW wrote: ↑Fri Feb 12, 2021 2:16 am As far as the spammer goes: We don't need to be fair to them. He wonders why his thread was deleted?

I remember being 11, getting on IRC, and spamming. However, I wasn't even aware of it at the time until I was banned.
People also can be complete arseholes without even realising it, like, again, myself when I was 13 and I joined another forum. Of course, I didn't realise it until I was banned. 2 times.
It takes a lot of time to negotiate, so I can understand wanting to skip all of that. Especially since this forum seems to be currently under attack by the spambots from the looks of it.
I have an ASD, so empathy is not natural for me. If I hurt you, I apologise.
Re: Where is a my topic with invite
That's why I said: Delete all those topics coming from spammers. Then the newbie doesn't see the thread anymore.
But that's a different kind of spam again and not the persons I was talking about. I didn't mean to delete the "Please download my shitty Template Creator program that I wrote in Visual Basic 6 about 10 years ago and it's the only thing I ever created." I'm talking about the "Buy pills, play casino, find dates" spammers.
To try to fool the other person into thinking you're innocent.
That's a different kind of spam and falls under the obnoxious category. I'm not talking about general bullshitters. I'm talking about some Chinese or Indian employee whose task it is to write posts in forums that advertise for some stupid product or online service. The OP from this thread here is clearly one of those and not just some nerd trying to promote his shitty VB6 tool. Hence, negotiation is unnecessary. He's not some brat who did something wrong and who might better himself. He's a commercial spammer. He will never contribute anything on-topic on this forum.
