Yeah, there's a very prominent 60hz buzz as Startropics fades out music. (You can hear something similar in Super Mario Bros. between levels.)
My favourite way to do it was with a DPCM sample to ramp to a specific value, but then play it back at a tuned pitch (the samplerates come in a partial A440-tuned scale) at the same time as that pitch is being played in the song.
