French NES, video cable for cheap?

Post by 10NES »

I will soon receive French NES which is missing video cable. This version of NES does not use RF or Composite output ports as others but instead it has it's own special AV cable.

I was wondering if there is a way to mod SNES or N64 AV cables to fit as they look somewhat similar:

They seem to have a "notch" in the connector however. Apparently one option would be to mod RCA jacks to the console, I have modded original Famicom this way but never a NES.

Looks like pin spacing won't match. Unless you can find a better source, your best bet is probably copper tape on something thin and rigid like card stock or plastic.

Unfortunately, pinout looks like it's going to be a pain, too. Of the 10 pins, three are clearly grounded, and we know that another five are red, green, blue, composite sync, and audio, but I'm not certain about the last two.

Maybe one is 9-12VDC to signal that the port is active, and another might be ~3VDC to notify that it's sending RGBS.

Would the RCA mod be the best option? I already have two jacks. I Googled that I should be able to get video by soldering a wire to a spesific pin:

But apparently after that video might be dim? So I would need to have amplifier, like this?

Please correct me if I understood wrong. I have modded couple Famicoms without any issue, but I have always done it by simply following someones instructions strictly.

Edit: I also have transistors which I bought in case I break the one in Famicoms, would those be compatible or do I absolutely need the one shown in that diagram?

Edit2: I have once modded one Famicom console by using this diagram, does it work with NES also? I don't care if that special AV connector no longer functions if I can get RCA.

Yeah, you should be able to use the ordinary Famicom / NES2 single-BJT video amplifier modification.

After the modification, you'll "just" have a PAL NES.

Received the console and built the amp by using the same schematic as with Famicom. Works fine.

I haven't finished the project yet (I have to drill holes etc.) but in case someone else is wondering you can mod French NES this way and forget that expensive cable.
