Most programmers do have a DC-DC converter (or multiple), even Willem programmers.

BTW, if you want to program EPROMs, you have to check if the programmer has input for an AC adapter, because the 5V supplied by USB are not enough for programming EPROMs.

Completely inaccurate, I've never had a problem programming any EPROMs with any programmer that uses the USB for power. I tend to use an AC adapter regardless, but you can certainly do it without.

maybe it depends on the size? 27C256 compared to 27C040?

No they require the same programming voltage. There are some simple programmers that lack step up circuitry, so they cannot program eproms using a 5v power supply.

If the chips you want to program are specifically listed in the programmers supported devices list I don't think you have to worry too much about it.

alright i noticed that for the cd it doesnt say it is compatible with windows 7, but other postings of the same programmer on ebay say that it is? do you think that it is just because when it was released windows 7 wasnt out? is there a big difference between windows vista and windows 7 for the programmer hardware?

well http://www.topwin6.com/Top853Det.html

It dose not list win7 in particular, so it may or may not work idk.

btw if you interest is just owning a specific repro cart there are people who will do it for less than the cost of the programmer
