FDS RP2C33 and Konami VRC VII decaps by digshadow

Post by rainwarrior » Fri Jan 16, 2015 1:24 pm

Lord_Nigh shared these links on IRC earlier, and I thought the forums would be interested. These are Decap photos made by digshadow.

FDS RP2C33: http://siliconpr0n.org/archive/doku.php ... rp2c33_01a
Konami VRC VII: http://siliconpr0n.org/archive/doku.php ... vii_053982

Unfortunately the VRC7 instrument ROM is encoded with a process that doesn't make the bits visually distinct, so they are still a mystery, but I'm told there is a chemical process that might be used to reveal the information later on.

Any idea of where the functional groups are on each die, especially the two big solid boxes near the bottom of the 2C33?

Those dies could contain more transistors than the original chipset on the Famicom mainboard..

The two big chunks on RP2C33 could be the ROM mask for wavetable?

As I understand, those actually contain the FDS BIOS itself - the "wavetable" for FDS sound is all RAM.

Incidentally, I've started tracing the RP2C33's metal layer - watch here for progress.

Yeah, I totally forgot about the BIOS ROM

What type of RAM does this die include?

Could have linked http instead of https, alternatively, if the https version is really just your private thing.
